Chapter One
The Beginning of the Core
I’m with my mentor, Frostfire, as we jump from building to
building. We have been in lookout for about three hours now and we have already
stopped two bank robberies.
“ Raven, Get ready. It looks like we might have something
going on down there,” Frostfire pointed out to the left over by the museum.
There was a group of five men running from the doors of the museum. Then I
noticed two guys swinging down from the roof.
“ looks like we’re not the only ones out here tonight,
Frost,” I say to her. I watch as the two down at the museum. There seemed to be one younger one and one
older one. Mentor and apprentice, like me and Frostfire. The older one got
knocked down while the other one threw something out at the two men.
“ looks like they need help, Come on Raven, we need to get
down there to bust them,” Frostfire
jumped from the building and created an ice slide to the museum. I jumped down and followed her
to the museum.
As we went down the, I melted the ice using some fire. At
the flick at the end frost jumped off and landed on the shoulders of one of the
guys knocking him flat on the ground. As
I jump from the end I land flipping and grabbing my bow and an arrow from my
quiver. I notch it and shoot before my feet even touch the ground.
The arrow hits one of the men square in the chest. The
arrow’s head releases a foam that hardens to stone almost instantly.
“ Great shot Raven, but I think your powers would be more
useful,” Frostfire said as she shot a white hot flame at the ground next to one
of the other men. As the flame circled around the man, the younger hero came up
from behind one of the men and struck down on his head knocking him on
conscious..
“ But Frost you know I’m still learning to control them.
It’s too risky,” as I said that one of the men came up and knocked the bow out
of my hand. “ Well, I guess I need to now ,don’t I?” I hit the guy in the head
my hands frosted over. As my hands touched his head the ice spread down his
neck and around his body.
“whoa,” the young guy said to me a smile on his face. I
couldn’t see his eyes properly, his mask was covering them. I could only guess
what they were doing. However, the way his cheeks were turned up I could guess
they were shining.
Just as I was about to say thanks one of the other men came
up behind him, “look out!” I was surprised by how fast he reacted to my shout.
He turned around swept his leg out and knocked down one of the goons that were
attacking us. His mentor seemed to be getting up slowly so that he could knock
down the one his apprentice was currently fighting. Then
the mentor came up and struck down the goon by using a five finger
freeze and then hitting him on the head.
“ Well, if it isn’t Frostfire herself! How lovely it is to
see you again. You must be her sidekick, Raven, Yes?” The hero asked me with a
bright smile.
“ I’d prefer it if you called me an apprentice, it’s not
like I can’t fight my own battles. But yes, I am Raven,” I replied. Being
called a sidekick sent a white hot needle threw my gut. I’d been called it
before but Frost had agreed it was a demeaning name, herself once being a
sidekick.
“ Well, Raven you and Apollo here have one thing in common,
you both don’t like to be called sidekicks. Oh, how rude of me, I am Lumos, one
of Frostie’s old friends,” he gave a small chuckle and turned to give Frostfire
a hug.
“ Frostie?” I asked my mentor trying not to laugh. She returned my look by glaring at me and
creating a snowball ready to throw at me. I put my hands up and turned to talk
to Apollo.
“ Hey, good work over there,” I said to Apollo as I went to
pick up my bow. I pressed a button on the inside of one of the grips. The bow
then shrunk and turned into a crescent moon. I slipped it into my hair using
the pin on the back.
“ Neat trick, and you too. Have you been with Frostfire
long? I’ve been working with Lumos for almost a year now,” Apollo asked me and
he went to shake my hand.
“ Yeah, two and a half years. We met a few years ago when I
got into some trouble with my powers. What about you? How did you and Lumos
meet?” I asked him as I went to tie up the baddies.
“ we met when I was out one night and got into some trouble.
Told me I had a talent and asked me if I wanted to train with him, not that
much of a story there,” he replied with a shrug.
As we were finishing up there Frostfire and Lumos came over
and had seemed to be having a conversation. A serious conversation.
“ They want you to join the team frost, and you know I’m
sure we can work something out for the others,” Lumos said in a slight whisper.
“ Yes , well until that something happens, I won’t be
joining. I can’t leave Raven yet, she’s only just started to control her
powers properly. Until I’m sure she’ll
be able on her own I won’t be leaving her,” She whispered back in a harsher
tone.
“ well, they can’t say I didn’t try now can they? Anyway, if
they’re making a team for us why not make the sidekicks a team?” Lumos said a
smirk growing at the side’s of his mouth. Frost’s face lit up at the idea and
she practically hugged Lumos for the idea.
“ That's perfect! They could train still and we could still
help them and they’d have each other to depend on!” She yelled out, obviously
forgetting that we were there.
“ What’s a good idea Frostfire?” Apollo asked coming up beside
me. Okay, well only I heard them but still. When Frost turned her head to smile at both of us I knew she was going to use this plan.
